ECU CHANCELLOR HAS SUCCESSFUL SURGERY

Dr. W. Randolph Chitwood Jr.

Chancellor William V. Muse underwent successful bypass surgery Tuesday, Jan. 7 to repair a coronary artery.

The surgery at Pitt County Memorial Hospital was performed by Dr. J. Mark Williams and Dr. W. Randolph Chitwood Jr., both professors of surgery at the Brody School of Medicine at ECU.

Chitwood said, "He's doing well. We did a bypass to the one artery that was giving him trouble. There was no other damage, and all his other coronary arteries look good. His heart is healthy."

Muse is resting comfortably and is expected to make a quick recovery, Chitwood said. The recovery will be enhanced by the fact that Muse was not placed on a heart-lung machine during the surgery, Chitwood said.

Muse is expected to be released from the hospital by the weekend. He plans to be available on a limited basis next week and back in his office full time in about four weeks.
