ECU Director of Military Affairs Begins position
The former deputy commander of the U.S. Army Training Support Center has been appointed ECU's first Director of Military Affairs. Steve Duncan began the position Monday (March 3, 2003).
Duncan's main focus will be coordinating relationships between ECU and the military through the use of technology.
"The idea is to try to accommodate the special needs of that market," Duncan said.
Duncan's position was created about two years ago, but was frozen due to budget constraints.
Darryl Davis, associate vice chancellor for distributed education and academic information technology, said the position is multi-fold.
"He will be exploring opportunities for ECU to do more delivery of educational programs to military personnel," Davis said.
In addition to serving as a liaison between the military and the university, Duncan will help develop specially tailored programs.
"He will be improving the dialogue between the military to make the military folks aware of what we have to offer," Davis said. "He will also be developing some ECU programs especially for the military."
Partnership between the military and ECU is a natural synergy, Davis said.
"With the way ECU delivers courses online, we are a good fit for many military and professional students to continue their education," he said.
For the past decade Duncan has worked as the Deputy commander of U.S. Army Training Support Center in Fort Eustis, Va. where he was responsible for supporting distance learning activities in 18 Army training schools and worldwide deployments, including Bosnia, Haiti and Korea. He has also served as the director of individual training for the Department of Defense Training and Performance Data Center in Orlando, Fla.
