CUPOLA PLAZA PROJECT

Early in the Shared Visions campaign, then Chancellor Richard R. Eakin announced plans to erect a double-size replica of the cupola that sat atop the original Austin Building, the first structure on campus. That cupola was destroyed when Austin was razed in 1969.

Cupola Plaza is located on the east campus mall near the entrance to Joyner Library. It is a landmark representing East Carolina's rich past and bright future. At night, the lighted cupola is visible from Fifth Street by looking between Jarvis and Fleming residence halls.

Shared Visions provided alumni and friends an opportunity to make an unrestricted contribution of $250 to have a name inscribed on a brick.

More than 1,100 donors purchased bricks generating approximately $275,000 which will be used to support the university's academic and alumni outreach programs.
