Debbie and husband Bob have two children Robby, 7, and Rebecca, 2. Angela Pennino-Curley and husband Art live in San Rafael, CA. Angela is vice president of Hée Nalu Outrigger Canoe Club. Angela and ECU friend Buzz Bramen, a coach for the NBA Washington Bullits, met and shared ECU memories when Buzz was visiting the San Francisco Bay area. Buzz is working on a basketball shooting video featuring famous NBA players. Monika Sutherland '76,'82 and Martin Fleming of Tarboro married Sept. 2, 1995. Monika and Martin lead continuing education seminars and tours to historic sites and parks in North Carolina and Virginia. Monika also leads tours of historic Tarboro and the Blount Bridgers House as a volunteer docent. She is department chair of English/Humanities for Edgecombe Community College.

Linda Gibson Saylor of Fairview left her position as orchestra director for Rugby Middle and West Henderson High schools and is working as an agent with Horace Mann Insurance. Linda and husband Paul have two sons, Will, 17, and Ben, 14. Gloria Junkins Talley of Greer, SC, is language arts coordinator for Anderson School District Five. Gloria had an article published in the fall, 1995, issue of Education Issues: The Journal of the USC -S School of Education, titled "Of Cooties and Moles: Scars From School."

His unit flies the C9A Nightingale aeromedical evacuation aircraft. Danny T. Ferguson '69 of Winston-Salem, a self-employed attorney, received the Harvey A. Lupton Award from the Forsyth County Criminal Defense Trial Lawyers Association, in recognition of high professional achievement in the field of criminal law. Keith D. Holmes Jr., PhD '68,'74, formerly of Burroughs Wellcome in Greenville, NC, is group director, analytical research and development, for Pfizer Inc. Keith and wife Susan T. Holmes '76 live in East Lyme, CT, with their sons, Christopher and Benjamin. William H. Lindsey, PhD '68,'71,'91 is executive director of the Fort Lauderdale, FL, public housing authority. He was profiled in The Wall Street Journal Dec. 7, 1995, for his continuing efforts to rehabilitate public housing complexes through his Oasis Technique, "identifying resident-leaders, with strong values, and then helping them create islands of stability within their neighborhoods." In 1985 Bill received ECU's Outstanding Alumni Award for dedication and service to his community. Lynn Wood Wilson '67, assistant vice president of Carolina First Bank, was elected mayor of Georgetown, SC. Robert C. Christesen '66,'87 performed as baritone soloist with the Duke Chapel Choir, Durham Choral Society, Raleigh Oratorio Society and NC Symphony. Robert also made appearances before the NC Association of School Administrators and the UNC-CH Principals' Executive Program and German Studies Symposium at NCSU. He is assistant principal at Enloe Magnet High School. Robert and wife Mirka, Wake County's 1996 Gifted Teacher of the Year, live in Raleigh. Alfred H. Lockamy '66,'74,'77 of Swan Quarter retired as principal of Mattamuskeet High School in November, 1995, with more than 30 years of service as a teacher and administrator. Alfred and Linda Cherry Lockamy '63 have a daughter, Cherry, a senior at ECU, and a son, Christian, who is in the Navy. Horace C. Robertson '66,'68 of Cary served in the Raleigh Technical Assistance Center for two years and has returned to the State Department of Public Instruction as administrative support consultant designing curriculum improvements for administrative support occupation preparation programs in North Carolina high schools. Lois Edgerton Sasser '64 of Pikeville retired as a French teacher at Southern Wayne High School after more than 30 years of service. Rebecca Elaine Hill Whitfield '64 of Lumberton is an English instructor at Robeson Community College and serves as chair of the department of English/Social Sciences. In November, 1995, she received the Excellence in Teaching award from the NC Community College system.

Gwendolyn Clark Esch '59,'65 of Miami, FL, retired as a second grade academic excellence team program teacher after 35 years of service. In 1972 she received an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America award. In 1991 she received her doctorate from Nova College. Her dissertation on nurturing second grader's literacy and language development received Nova University's Practicum Award and was selected by the Educational Information Center for inclusion in their ERIC data base. She plans to continue her writing experiences through the Institute of Children's Literature. Gwyn and husband Walter, a retired coach with 41 years of service in Dade County, have two children, Walter Jr. and Eric. Robert T. Maynard '58 of Cary retired as vice president and general manager of John Deere Company, Atlanta, after 37 years with Deere and Company. Robert serves as director of First Newton Bank of Covington, GA, and director of Amadas Industries of Suffolk, VA. During his ECU, days Bob was on the ECU football and track teams. Julia Smith Joyner Harper '57 and husband Bynum of Snow Hill announce the birth of a grandson, Joseph Harper, Aug. 2. Granddaughter Caroline is 2. Julia retired from teaching in Lenoir County. Agnes Markham -Canzona '57 of Winston-Salem is a clinical dietitian for hematology/oncology and general medicine at the NC Baptist Hospital Teaching Facility for Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Agnes is chair-elect for the Oncology Nutrition Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association. This fall she traveled to Sicily and Italy. William J. Harris '54 of North Miami, FL, retired as instructional supervisor for safety, driver education and junior reserve officer training corps for Dade County public schools, the fourth largest school district in the US. Bill and Mary Alice Harris '54 have three children and four grandchildren.

OBITUARIES

Ellen Sandbank Goldfarb '71 of Greenville died Oct. 23, 1995. Ellen taught remedial reading in Aurora, served as a substitute teacher in Greenville schools and was the original owner of the Baskin Robbins stores in Greenville. Most recently she worked for the pediatric dental practice of Dr. Jasper Lewis. Ellen is survived by Marty Goldfarb '68 and a daughter, Lee.

George S. Willard Jr. '37 of Louisburg died Dec. 12, 1995. He was an educator in Wilson public schools for 38 years until his retirement in 1976. During this time he also served as adjunct professor of education at Atlantic Christian College (Barton College). Dr. Willard was active in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools from 1963 to 1969 and was a former vice president of the NC High School Athletic Association. In 1960, he was honored by the Raleigh News & Observer as a "Tarheel of the Week." From 1945 until 1987 Dr. Willard was an active member and officer of the Wilson Kiwanis Club and received the Kiwanian of the Year award in 1980. He was a Scoutmaster and district chairman of the Boy Scouts of America and served as president of the ECU Alumni Association from 1963 to 1965. He is survived by his wife, Doris Elizabeth Burney Willard '40 and daughter Dr. George-Anne Willard '66.

Keith D. Holmes Sr. of Boones Mill, VA, a member of the ECU School of Education faculty from 1951 to 1976, died Dec. 24. He was a pioneer in reading education, having developed a visual -phonic method for teaching children to read. Specializing in problem learners, he established reading clinics and reading staff development for school systems throughout eastern North Carolina and parts of Virginia. In 1992 Dr. Holmes was honored with the formal naming of the reading center he established in East Carolina's School of Education. He published a number of books on his reading education theory and a book of poetry. During his retirement he lectured part time at the University of Virginia and Ferrum College. He is survived by his wife, Adreana, and two sons, Keith D. Holmes Jr. '68,'74 and Stephen Edward Holmes '72. A memorial service was held Jan. 6 in the Holmes Reading Center on campus. Memorial gifts may be made to the Holmes Reading Center c/o the ECU School of Education.
